Thanksgiving Fire Safety: Tips to Keep Your Holiday Bright

November 27, 2025/in Fire Safety & Education

Thanksgiving is one of the warmest days of the year — and unfortunately, one of the busiest days for home cooking fires. With a little preparation and some easy safety habits, your family can enjoy a safe, joyful holiday meal.

Stay Safe in the Kitchen

  • Never leave cooking food unattended. Most holiday fires start on the stovetop.
  • Keep kids and pets three feet away from hot surfaces and sharp tools.
  • Turn pot handles inward to avoid spills or burns.
  • Clean cooking surfaces to prevent grease flare-ups.

Turkey Frying Safety (A Big One!)

Fried turkey may be delicious — but turkey fryers can be dangerous if used incorrectly.

  • Always set up OUTDOORS, far from buildings and vehicles.
  • Make sure your turkey is fully thawed before frying.
  • Keep a Class K or multipurpose fire extinguisher nearby.
  • Never overfill the fryer with oil.

Holiday Décor & Candle Safety

  • Keep flammable items at least three feet from heat sources.
  • Consider battery-powered candles for a safer glow.
  • Check your smoke alarms and change batteries if needed.

What to Do If a Fire Occurs

  • For grease fires: Turn off heat and cover the pan — never use water.
  • If clothing catches fire: Stop, Drop, and Roll.
  • For large fires: Evacuate immediately and call 911.

Make safety part of your holiday tradition — share these tips with someone you love.
